Matt Damon is the brand ambassador for Crypto.com

  • The cryptocurrency platform is launching a major marketing campaign.
  • Damon is also a shareholder in the Singapore-based firm.

Matt Damon, the actor, will be the face of Crypto.com as the cryptocurrency platform seeks to attract new users and bring the industry into the mainstream.

This is the first global marketing push for Crypto.com, which has more than tenfold increased its user base since last year due to increased interest in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. It will spend more than $100 million on the campaign, which will include advertisements starring Damon and directed by cinematographer Wally Pfister that will air in over 20 countries.

“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Damon said in an interview. “We’re hoping this is the start of a fantastic long-term collaboration.”

This year, cryptocurrency platforms such as Crypto.com, FTX, and Coinbase are investing heavily in marketing as well as signing deals with sports leagues and teams. Celebrities are also getting involved, whether through partnerships or personal investments.

Crypto.com is now affiliated with Formula One, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and the top soccer league in Italy. It also has agreements with the French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Montreal Canadiens, and Aston Martin Cognizant of Formula One.

Crypto.com has also enlisted mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey, basketball star Carmelo Anthony, snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis, rapper CL, and astronaut Scott Kelly as part of the Damon campaign.

“This is a watershed moment for the company and the industry,” Chief Executive Officer Kris Marszalek said.

Bitcoin prices have nearly doubled year to date, reaching a high of $66,976 earlier this month. Rising cryptocurrency prices and interest have coincided with increased attention from celebrities ranging from Amitabh Bachchan to Kim Kardashian.

Marszalek’s company, which is based in Singapore, was founded in 2016. It has approximately 10 million users of its app and a crypto-card program offered in collaboration with Visa Inc.

Damon, a Crypto.com investor, stated that he is conservative with his investments and will typically “ride or die with the economy” as he focuses on his day job making movies.

He met the company through discussions about his non-profit organization Water.org. Crypto.com made a $1 million donation and is launching initiatives to encourage users to donate cryptocurrency to charity.

“It’s certainly beneficial to us,” Damon said. “We can put it to good use right away.”
